Dear Family of Self-Healers,
This has a been a long time coming!! We finally made the trek to American Biodental Center in Tijuana, Mexico for my sweetie Tunde's dental work and for me to get a first-hand experience. I already had seen the dentistry that had been done for a number of my friends and clients after their visit to American Biodental.
Let me say right away: I was and am impressed!
I have promised many of you over the last couple of years to go there myself and share my experience with you. It was truly a lovely experience if you can say that about having ANY dental work done (plus I am cheating since I wasn't in the chair) but believe me I turn into a bit of a mama lion when it comes to my sweetie who is simply terrified in the dental chair.
First: The 1.5 hour flight from Sacramento to San Diego: We paid about $150 per person to fly with just a backpack. Parking at the Sacramento airport lot is $11 per day.
It should have been a smooth ride but we had a 3 hour delay while waiting for the flight crew to arrive.
The silver lining was seeing American Biodental working their magic to accommodate us after being 3 hours late for his blood work, initial dental exam, X-rays and consultation that had to happen that day to shoe-in all the appointments the next day and the following.
After arriving in San Diego we were picked up at Terminal 2 (Zone S) which I understand is a bit different depending from where you arrive but they will tell you when you give the front desk your flight information. You basically follow the signs for "baggage and ground transportation".
Their van is clearly marked with "American Biodental" and both drivers (one for the morning drive and one for the afternoon) are friendly and were easy to chat with (especially if you are speaking the language LOL which I do not) plus will contact you via cell phone upon your arrival in San Diego.
The drive is about 35 minutes depending on traffic and crossing the border is basically a non-event. (You will need to bring your passport.) American Biodental does this drive 2-3 times daily and it is (for them) a well-oiled process which I truly would not attempt by myself.
Once you arrive at the Grand Hotel Tijuana (it's a big two high-rise tower-like building, and houses everything: the dental/medical offices on the ground floor "C", the restaurant/buffet (and swimming pool, hot tub and cabanas) on floor "P" and the hotel rooms above it all. There is also a French restaurant and cafe on the ground floor plus sports bar etc.
Hint: Unfortunately there is a Starbucks around the corner :))))
Basically, you don't have to leave the hotel through the entire process if you so choose!
Note: When you use the elevator you will have to hold your hotel key card up to a registration "spot" located above all the floor buttons otherwise the darn thing doesn't move LOL!!! Yep! It was a bit embarrassing when I tried to tell the manager that the elevator wasn't working AGAIN :))
The hotel rooms were comfortable and clean and I believe we paid about $150 per night. (A dear friend flew in at the same time and we shared the room with her which raised the nightly price a bit.)
It added a lot to Tunde's and our friend's experience (of ease) having someone to share this journey with and to be there to bring maybe water or tea, a sweater... plus in my case administering liberal doses of Arnica, Hypericum and Rescue Remedy (and more) to both of them from our Holistic Dental Rescue Kit!
I would highly encourage anyone going to take a "buddy" especially if there is general anesthesia involved.
Both decided to have Vitamin C drips (a 3 hour process) after their respective appointments to support the body in the healing process. You are hooked up to the IV, sitting in a super comfortable recliner (with everyone around you doing the same!!) I almost read an entire book LOL but really was there to be their back up if they needed anything brought to them or needed support in any way.
Our experience with the entire staff was lovely and we felt very well taken care of. Alteira, at the front desk, speaks English impeccably and most likely will be the person talking to you about the treatment plan and cost; she is very knowledgeable and was our go-to when we needed any translation.
Many of the staff have a limited amount of English but the front desk staff is always available to translate or answer questions.
Tunde' decided on full sedation for the 2 extractions since one of them was badly infected and had been for some years! While he was under (with full supervision of an anesthesiologist) Dr. Alejandro also prepped one of his teeth for a crown and cemented a long-lasting temporary. We will be back in September to finish the work...
The temporary partial (for only $100) was already placed (as a band-aid over the extraction site) by the time Tunde' was waking up.
Blood work had been done specifically to determine if sedation was a safe option for him and to prepare for his plasma ozone and stem cell treatment but what blew us away was that one of their MD's took the time to discuss with us her understanding of the results in terms of his general health! Yay!! And answered our questions!!! Double Yay!! LOL :)
I am happy to talk more in depth to anyone considering going to American Biodental. My suggestion would be to book a free 15 minute check-in with me to see what your needs are and to go from there :))
Last, but definitely not least: Money!
Here in the States, Tunde's treatment plan came to about $8000! We didn't have $8000 to spend on his teeth ($3000 alone for being "under" for 2-3 hours).
At American Biodental we payed $1800 for a crown preparation/temporary crown, blood work, an initial exam with X-rays, 2 extractions (one of them badly infected), plasma ozone,
Vitamin C drip and general anesthesia (3 hours!!!)
And not only was it affordable for us but the work was done according to holistic principles and extremely well executed! The temporary partial was literally invisible and needed only the smallest adjustment to be comfortable :))
I asked Tunde' if he had to give his experience there a number (from 1-10, 10 being perfect) His answer: 12!! LOL Believe me, coming from him, it is high praise indeed!!!
There is really only one small word of caution to the unsuspecting traveler journeying to American Biodental:
They will tend to give you a treatment plan that contains EVERYTHING you ever wanted (or NOT wanted) to do for your mouth!
Please stay calm, breathe, take another breath and call me!
In fact it might not be a bad idea to have received a treatment plan, here with your dentist in the states, and for you to know what might need to be done.
I know it can feel frightening and overwhelming! Having your back is what my passion is all about! Please feel free to reach out to me! It would be my pleasure to walk with you on your dental journey my dears :)
Much love,
Rupam
This is great information and what a fantastic resource for getting dental work that sometimes can be so intimidating, expensive and so often, not holistic. I’m curious to learn more as I’ve had some nightmarish dental experiences and hope to line up good options for any future issues I have. This is a good start and I now want to learn more about what holistic dental even means in practice compared to conventional practices. Vit C drip sounds holistic and definitely not something I have even had the option to try. Thanks Rupam!
