Swedish Bitters
The characteristic feature of the Swedish Bitters lies in its masterful combining of ingredients. The principle of synergy applies here; the whole is greater than the sum of its individual parts, which means the elixir has a far greater effect than does the taking of each substance separately. The Bitters formula is known to have been used throughout the Middle Ages. More recently in the 18 century, Dr. Samst labeled the formula Swedish Bitters, and Maria Treben, the acclaimed European herbalist, repopularized its use during the 20 th century. Experience has shown that the Swedish Bitters elixir has a remarkably wide range of applications. Digestive complaints, general detoxifying, insomnia, allergies, cold and flu symptoms are some of the most common uses. Ingredients: Angelica root, rhubarb, aloe, manna ash, senna leaf, zedoary root, theriac venezian camphor, carline thistle, myrrh and saffron. In 40% grain alcohol.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE Internally According to the "old Manuscript," take 1 teaspoon diluted in warm water or herb tea morning and evening. For indisposition of any kind, take up to 1 tablespoon diluted in warm water three times a day. For serious diseases, 2-3 tablespoons are taken as follows: 1/2 tablespoon diluted in 1/4 cup warm water or herb tea is sipped 30 minutes before each meal, and 1/2 tablespoon diluted in 1/4 cup warm water or herb tea is sipped 1 hour after each meal. Conditions where the internal use of Swedish Bitters is not appropriate: diarrhea, cases of intestinal obstruction, during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please be aware that camphor neutralizes homeopathic remedies; allow three to four hours before taking homeopathic remedies. Externally A piece of cotton, wool flannel or gauze is moistened with undiluted Swedish Bitters and applied to the affected area, which has been well covered with calendula ointment or another pure herbal salve to prevent skin irritation or drying. A larger piece of plastic (i.e. "saran wrap") is put over it to prevent staining. Lastly a cloth or bandage is wrapped comfortably around the compress to hold all in place. Leaving the compress on overnight is optimal. If not possible, application of 2-4 hours is recommended. Some common uses are to dab on insect bites, pimples, cold sore, chicken pox blisters, compresses for stomach aches, sore throats, mumps, sprains and strains, swelling, arthritis, pains and aches, tennis elbow, cramps. For headaches, lie down for 15 minutes and apply cloth moistened with Bitters to forehead, back of head or neck.
